How to Split a PDF into Pages

Add the document and choose how to split it. Select the one-page-per-file option to turn every page into its own PDF, or define ranges when you want complete sections. Ranges are entered as a comma-separated list such as 1-3,5-7.

Open each result before sharing and confirm it starts and ends on the intended page. The most common mistake here is confusing the number printed on the page with the page position the viewer reports; in documents with a cover and a table of contents those two numbers almost never match.

Splitting is for breaking a document into several parts in a systematic way, such as separating a hundred-page report into its chapters or turning every page into a separate file. You end up with multiple output files.

Extraction pulls scattered pages into a single new document. If you need a summary made of pages 2, 7 and 11, that is the right tool; the output is one file and it keeps the order you chose. In short: several files means split, one selection means extract.

When a document exceeds an upload limit, splitting is a lossless alternative to compression: nothing about the pages changes, the document is simply divided. If the recipient accepts multiple files, this is usually the cleanest route.

Name the parts after their content. Names like report-01-summary and report-02-method tell the recipient which file to open, whereas split-1 and split-2 will mean nothing even to you a few days later.

Sending only the pages that are needed reduces exposure and is good practice in itself. But if the page you must send contains a sensitive field, removing the other pages is not enough.

That case calls for permanent redaction. Drawing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor only covers the view; the text underneath usually remains selectable and copyable. To genuinely remove identification numbers, account details or amounts, use a redaction tool.
