How to Repair a Corrupt PDF File Online
When a PDF refuses to open, the content is often intact and the internal index that records where each object lives is what broke. Repair rebuilds that structure and rewrites the document, and it runs online without installing recovery software.
Identify the problem first
Pin down the symptom before repairing. Does the file fail to open at all, open with blank pages, show one broken page, or ask for a password? A file that asks for a password is not damaged; unlock it with the PDF Unlock tool instead.
A damaged-file warning very often means an incomplete download. Compare the file size with the source, and download it again if you can. Try every copy you have, in email attachments, cloud storage and your downloads folder, because usually only one copy is corrupted.
Repair the file in your browser
Add the file to PDF Repair and start the process. The tool rebuilds the cross-reference table and writes the document out cleanly, which resolves most cases where the damage is structural rather than in the page content itself.
If it succeeds, download and open the result. Severely truncated files with genuinely missing data cannot be recovered and the tool reports an error; at that point, finding another copy or asking the sender to export the document again is the only realistic route.
Check the repaired file
Do not assume a recovered file is complete. Compare the page count with the original, look for text rendering as boxes or question marks, confirm images are present and test any form fields.
Because the file is rewritten, digital signatures become invalid. A repaired signed document is usable for reading the content, but if the signature must remain legally valid, request a fresh copy from the signer. A smaller file size after repair is normal, since unused objects are discarded.
Problems repair cannot fix
A blurry or unreadable scan is a quality problem, not corruption, so repair will not sharpen it; the document has to be scanned again. Pages arriving blank can mean the scan never captured content in the first place.
Use PDF Rotate for sideways pages and Page Reorder for pages in the wrong sequence. Text showing as empty boxes usually means the fonts were never embedded; converting the file to PDF/A embeds them and prevents the issue from recurring in archived copies.
