How to Edit a Word Document in Your Browser

Editing a Word document does not require an office suite on your machine. When the file opens in the browser it loads with its own structure, so styles, tables and page layout stay where they are instead of being rebuilt from copied text.

Opening and editing the file

Upload the DOCX to your workspace and open it. The document renders in the browser with its headings, lists, tables and layout intact.

When you are done, download it in the same format or export it as a PDF. The source file stays in your workspace, so you are not forced to overwrite it.

Why the formatting survives

Pasting text into a chat window carries only plain text. Heading levels, numbering, table cells and style definitions are left behind and have to be rebuilt by hand.

Working on the document directly removes that step. Edits are applied to the file's own structure, so the formatting never leaves and comes back.

Account and cost

The document workspace needs a free Docly account. There is no software to install and no licence to buy.

A Windows desktop app is available separately if you also want offline access, and the same account works in both.

Common situations

If you receive an older DOC file, the quickest fix is to ask the sender to save it again as DOCX.

If the document uses a font you do not have, the layout can shift slightly. Exporting the final version as a PDF guarantees it looks the same for the recipient.

Quick checklist

  • Keep the original and download the edited copy separately.
  • Export to PDF before sharing so you do not depend on the recipient having an office suite.
  • Use heading styles in long documents — navigation and tables of contents rely on them.
  • For documents several people touch, use a team space instead of email attachments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit a DOCX without Word installed?

Yes. The file opens and edits in the browser with nothing to install.

Will editing break the formatting?

Edits are applied to the document's own structure, so styles and tables are preserved.
